Shoe Care Guide
The quality and look of footwear are one of the first things that catches the eye of people around you, and even a high-quality, but neglected pair of shoes can ruin your entire stylish look.
Horton makes sure that each pair of your shoes lasts as long as possible, while maintaining a good look and comfort when worn. An equally important part of success is choosing the right style, material and perfect size. But the most important thing is care: it is an essential condition for ensuring the neat appearance and durability of your shoes.
General rules for shoe care
To ensure the durability and beauty of your shoes, take advantage of our expert advice.
Dry and clean shoes
Remove dirt from your shoes immediately, as this will make the task easier. Wipe the shoes with a damp cloth and wait until they are dry before applying a protective cream and polishing.
If you get your shoes dirty, we recommend washing them as soon as you get home. And don’t forget to thoroughly clean the soles.
If your shoes get wet, leave them to dry naturally. Do not place them on a battery or near an electric heater. Before drying, we recommend placing crumpled paper inside the boots to protect them from deformation. It is better not to use forced drying, as it damages the condition of even high-quality materials over time.
Storage of out-of-season footwear
When you're going to store your winter boots with the onset of warmer weather, prepare a clean and dry box or special shoe bags and use special liners to help keep them in shape.
A pair of waxed or patent leather shoes should first be cleaned with a damp cloth and polished with a cotton or microfiber cloth after drying. Store your shoes in a cool, dry place. We also recommend having more than one pair of boots in your arsenal for one season, as it takes at least 24 hours for the shoes to dry completely.
It’s worth remembering that shoes made of different materials have their own care requirements, and products suitable for a pair of genuine leather shoes will ruin brand-new nubuck sneakers.
Material-Specific Shoe Care
Shoe care varies depending on the material. Here’s a general guide for different types:
Leather boot care
Leather is a natural, hard-wearing and durable material. But it does wear out over time, so it’s important to take proper care of it to extend its life and preserve the aesthetics of your leather shoes. We recommend cleaning them from dirt with brushes and using high-quality wax-based creams to protect them from moisture, cracking from temperature changes, etc. It is also worth polishing leather shoes or boots, especially patent leather ones, to keep them looking like new. Special sprays can be used for this purpose, but we recommend using only products that do not contain harsh chemicals or alcohol.
Provide your leather boots with good ventilation and dry them naturally. This will help prevent cracking. In winter, apply a water-repellent cream to your leather boots to protect them from getting wet due to snow.
Nubuck and suede boot care
These materials are soft to the touch, lightweight, warm and stylish. However, they are sensitive to moisture, dirt and various damages. If you don't clean your shoes in time, stains will become embedded in the material's fibers. Even old dust and sand particles can ruin shoes. To preserve the softness of suede and nubuck, we recommend using a high-quality waterproof spray to protect the surface of the shoe.
As nubuck and suede are sensitive to moisture, use a foam cleaner. This procedure should be carried out exclusively with a soft and dry brush and light movements to avoid damaging the material. This will help to restore softness to the product and remove dust. Any remaining foam can be removed with a soft sponge.
In summer, daily care of nubuck and suede shoes involves removing dust and dirt particles with a dry, soft sponge. Do not clean nubuck and suede shoes when they are wet.
Winter care should be more thorough: we recommend cleaning every 7 days for preventative maintenance, followed by a special spray to repel moisture.
